Dr Nilofer Farjo became the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery’s (ISHRS) president in October 2021. Dr Farjo took over the role from Dr Paul McAndrews at the society’s 29th annual meeting in Lisbon. With 30 years’ experience, Dr Farjo is one of the world’s leading hair transplant surgeons and has been consistently involved with pioneering research projects throughout this time.
The ISHRS was established in 1993 to showcase the latest trends and innovations from top hair clinics around the world. Since being founded, the society has grown to include over 1000 members from 70 countries; of which HairClone’s Clinical Partners and Banking Associates are all a part of.
During Dr Farjo’s time as president of the ISHRS, she has featured as a guest speaker at multiple international meetings and has overseen special editions of the ISHRS Forum journal for its 30th year, featuring guest editors.
In its 30 year history, the ISHRS has had only 3 women presidents. Whilst president, Dr Farjo set up a committee to assess the needs of women surgeons and founded the Women in ISHRS committee. This pioneering committee will create opportunities for mentoring young surgeons, assist with business needs, host webinars and encourage more women to speak at conferences and get involved in leadership.
Every two years, the ISHRS carries out a census, which gives an insight into global trends in hair restoration practice. The demand for hair restoration surgery has more than doubled in the last decade with over 700,000 surgeries taking place in 2021 versus 310,624 in 2012. The latest census, published in April 2022, reported that the number of surgeries required by each patient to achieve their desired result had decreased by 59% with an average of 1.4 surgeries, down from 3.4 in 2019. This is a testament to global collaboration encouraged and enabled by the ISHRS.
The ISHRS are holding their 30th annual meeting in Panama City, Panama on 27th-29th October 2022. The meeting will enable hair restoration surgeons to showcase their latest innovations and even perform live surgery at the meeting.
