Dermal papilla (DP) cells are found at the base of hair follicles and are responsible for regulating hair growth. DP cells re
lease signals that directly stimulate adjacent cells, including matrix epithelial cells that multiply and form the hair shaft. The signals released from DP cells include exosomes, cytokines and other stimulatory factors, many of which are undefined.
HairClone secured an Innovate UK grant in 2023 to investigate the complex mix of signals that dermal papilla cells release in order to control hair growth and how they elicit this effect on surrounding cells. As part of this project, in vivo test systems have been created that provide valuable data on stimulatory effects of topical treatments. This allows for an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms behind the growth benefits seen with stimulatory treatment.
DP-conditioned medium (dermalsome) is not yet clinically available; however, close contact with industrial partners and support from government funding and regulatory agencies have advanced our progress significantly.
